The last of the hold-out pregnant ewes gave birth yesterday.

 Twins!

She is a first-time mother and I had worried about her.  This ewe was as wide as she was tall and I was certain that she'd have twins. As a yearling, she loved the new babies and so I had hopes that she'd be a good mama herself.  She is.  She gave birth to twins all by herself (a plus!) and is the doting mother to both of them.  I returned from a herding lesson to find two more additions to the flock and a very attentive mama.

The little ewe is as friendly to me as she was before she gave birth, but the barn cat . . .  well that's another issue . . .

"Run, Cat, run!!!"

"Babies okay?"

  "Check!"

And so she assumed the position again, standing guard over her little ones, keeping them safe from the Big Bad World of Barn Cats.

 "Yawn . . . "

Sweet babies - they look so big for newborns! PLEASE post some closeups of the baby lambs on your farm.

They were born sometime yesterday morning and if they are like the rest of the lambs, they will gain weight fast! I'm tickled at how well these Dorper sheep perform. I will have to try to get some lamb shots for you. This set of pictures wasn't very good, but I loved the ewe chasing the cat and had to share them!

Adorable babies - love it that the black one is running along after Mom! Has Briar met these babies yet?

No, Briar has only seen them through the fence. The mother is very uneasy about anyone around her babies, including Briar. She wouldn't even go out in the pasture with everyone else today so I left her in the barn area. I'll let her decide when she's ready to let the babies meet Briar.

I love the color of the babies it is so clearly marked. That thirdcshot of them with the horses in the background makes me wonder about all that fencing you folks have done. Woozer. You must have decent ground to get those fence posts in so neetly. How much land are you all working?

We've done a lot of sheep fencing, but the sheep really only have about 9 acres. Until the babies are up some size, mamas and babies are stuck close to the barn where I can keep an eye on them.
