We were strangers until today, but I suppose God put me on that path because I'd understand. I saw the little dog's broken body in the ditch just across from my mailbox. I went to her and touched her side to make sure there was nothing I could do, but she was cold. Her little red collar was lying beside her at the edge of the road. I picked it up to check the tag, but it was from a clinic far from here, and I knew she was a neighbor. I picked up the collar anyway. At the time, I didn't know why, but now I do, for the collar led me there. We were pulling into the driveway with a load of feed, so I carried the collar with me while I opened gates to the barn. I got the animals fed and then climbed in the truck to drive to the neighbor's. On my way out the main gate I noticed the little dog's body was gone. They already knew. But they'd want her collar, so I drove on. I pulled into the driveway and began calling out. A moment later her tearstained face walked around the edge of the garage clutching the little dog wrapped in a sheet. We were strangers, but in that moment, she was a sister. I opened my arms and held her as she cried. As we cried together. She set the little dog down on the bloodstained tailgate of her truck and we talked. We held each other and cried some more. And then I knew why I'd been moved to take the collar. It led me to her, and on this terrible day, she needed the warm arms of a stranger who understood the pain of losing a good dog. Sometimes God just works that way. Comments:

I understand the heartbreak of losing a beloved pet all too well. We lost our 10yr old Border Collie this past September and our cat 2 weeks later. They took a piece of my heart with them. Sometimes all is needed is someone that will understand your pain.

Bless you, for being willing to be a shoulder for a stranger. I'm in tears now imagining it. I knelt alone on the side of the road one day. I still feel it like it was yesterday. Bless you, again.

I'm glad you were there for her...the pain of losing a beloved pet is so sharp and deep...I lost my beloved Claire-dog 15 months ago and now the pain is a dull ache that comes and goes. She was my 'heart dog' and she took part of my heart with her when she died. There will be another dog in my life someday, but not right now. She was part Border Collie, one of the reasons why I love hearing about your dogs.

When I had to put my beautiful Natasha to sleep in May, I was loading her in the car and the neighbor called out to me saying "are you going for a nice ride?" And I immediately burst into tears and said it was her last ride to the vet. My neighbor rushed over and gave me a hug and cried with me. It helped so much! So, I know your neighbor appreciated what you did for her as well.... it is so hard to lose a beloved pet and it is so helpful to be around people who "get it".

That's true. Sometimes the only thing that can make the pain bearable is the knowledge that someone else understands.

From the first times I read your blogs I knew that you were one of those who are appointed by the Creator for times like these. You are the blessing that comes along that makes it okay just by the touch of your hand or the sound of your voice.

Oh wow, Sue. I am incredibly humbled by that. Thank you! I really hope to be someday the person you believe me to be now. ((hugs))
