As you will recall, there was much speculation regarding the ancestry of a certain member of the family.

"Who? Me?"

We had been told that Briar was a Great Pyrenees/Komondor cross. I took that at face value and didn't worry too much about it until our vet received a free offer to do one of those fancy "Whose ya Daddy?" tests. He asked if he could use it on Briar since she was such an ~~odd~~ interesting dog.

According to the results, Briar was a Great Pyrenees/Belgian Malinois cross! WTF!!! Clearly there was a problem with the test. Several of you sent me photos of your GP/Kom crosses and wonder of wonders - they looked just like Briar!

Well, I need you folks now. Jessica adopted two GP/Kom pups a few years ago and fell in love with the cross. She recently lost one to a health problem and is looking for another. She is looking for a pet, so she says an LGD flunk-out would be just fine for her. I can certainly understand her wanting another one. They are cool dogs (if you can deal with the weird coat)

Great Pyrenees/Belgian Malinois :-O Very suspicious results! I wonder if something from Oli could have drifted into Briar's package that was sent to the lab.

I had my so called BC mix tested too. If you saw her, you would swear she was Border Collie. The reason I had her tested, was she didn't train like a BC. We knew she had some Pit Bull in her by the shape of her face, but the rest of her black and white body looked just like a BC. Turns out she is Pit Bull/Husky (whch cleared up the training issues). It doesn't really matter. She is the sweetest one of the pack.

We're assuming that somehow Oli's DNA was on Briar's leg. The funny thing was that I watched the vet wipe her leg down with alcohol and draw the blood myself. If it was tainted, that was one sensitive test. She actually showed to be a Great Pyrenees crossed with a Great Pyrenees/Malinois. There was no Komondor anywhere in their proposed DNA hodgepodge that made Briar. Shrug... I still believe the rancher. Her father is a Great Pyreness and her mother is a Komondor that was given to the rancher but went feral.

Thank you for posting the pictures of Bacchus. I think it's really interesting that Briar and Bacchus looked so different as puppies. He had very little fluff for the first year then it slowly filled in. Briar had an insane amount of puppy fur and it looks like it tamed down as she got older. How old is Briar?

I think Briar is three years old now. I'd have to look back at the blog archives. The vet estimated that she was 12 weeks old when I got her.
